  • 'Ao'ao O Na Loko I 'a O Maui, $30,000, to restore and rebuild the Ko'ie'ie fishpond wall in Kihei.
  • Friends of Moku'ula Inc., $30,000, for an archaeological data recovery and laboratory analysis of recovered cultural materials at Moku'ula, a sacred sanctuary for Hawaiian chiefs from the 14th to 19th centuries in Lahaina.
  • National Tropical Botanical Garden, $25,000, to protect, maintain and establish an interpretive program for Pi'ilanihale heiau in Hana and the surrounding area.

The authority's grants included money for groups doing work statewide. Those included $50,000 to the Lalakea Foundation for a world hula conference in July on Oahu and $20,000 to the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association for a six-month program that includes stargazing workshops, a rigging and knot clinic, canoe rides and traditional and modern canoe-building techniques and tools.

"Hawaiian culture is what differentiates Hawaii from other destinations around the world," said Lloyd Unebasami, the tourism authority's interim officer and chief executive officer. "Even with our current budget constraints, the HTA understands the importance of continuing to support programs that honor and perpetuate Hawaiian culture for our visitors and residents."

Overall, the authority awarded $620,000 to programs statewide.
