Treaty between the Kingdom of Hawai`i and the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway signed in Honolulu. "There shall be perpetual friendship between His Majesty the King of the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway, His Heirs and Successors, and the King of the Hawaiian Islands, His Heirs and Successors, and between their respective subjects."
The treaty also recognizes Hawaii's neutrality: "His Majesty the King of Sweden and Norway engages to respect in time of war the neutral rights of the Hawaiian Kingdom and to use his good offices with all other powers, having treaties with His Majesty the King of the Hawaiian Islands, to induce them to adopt the same policy towards the Hawaiian Kingdom."
Description:
Treaty signed between the Kingdom of Hawaii and the Swiss Confederation, for "perpetual peace and reciprocal liberty of establishment and commerce."
Description:
This annual event commemorates the events of July 31, 1843, when Admiral Thomas ended an unauthorized 5-month British occupation of Hawaii, and out of which came Kamehameha's III's expressions of "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka 'Aina I Ka Pono" which became Hawaii's motto and has remained so to this day. (Note that it is often translated as "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness," but Ea means both life and sovereignty—as in La Ho‘i Ho‘i Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day—and in the context it is clear that the latter meaning was intended and should not be forgotten today.)
